A Guide to Job Searching
Hunting for a job is a tough thing to do, but it really all depends on your approach.
When you apply for a job, you are actually selling yourself to a potential employer. It is important to let your potential employer know why you are the right person for the job over other applicants. Think about how you can stand out from the crowd.
Take time to make a great CV and cover letter. With your CV and cover letter, you are introducing yourself to your potential employer and hopefully you can greatly impress them with it. If it fails, don’t let it bring you down too much. Accept the rejection and look for some other place to apply.
Below are some useful approaches to job hunting.
Joining Linkedin can benefit you much. Being part of LinkedIn will be an asset to you. If you want to keep yourself updated on job offers, build your social network by joining discussion groups of industries you are interested in. If you follow companies that you like and comment on their posts, then this is one way to get noticed. Ensure that the comments that your posts are just professional ones.
Most companies hire people who their trusted employees can vouch for. Ask friends and family who work in industries that you would like to work in. You will know about vacancies firsthand and if you are recommended by your friend and family, then you have an advantage over your competitors.
Look for jobs outside of job listing. Don’t focus on vacancies but rather on companies. When you apply with this company, you already have an interest in it that will show in what you say. Job listings are still helpful though. Even if the company that you like has openings for positions you are not qualified for, send your CV and cover letter anyway. You will never know when that company will be needing people with your skills. Your great CV and cover letter will show them what you’ve got.
Research on jobs that are unfamiliar but may be the something that you would be interested to try out. This less traditional career path will have less competition but it will give you more opportunities to expand your horizons.
The way you handle the application process will give potential employers an idea of what kind of worker you are. Research about the company before making your move. You can benefit from understanding the company and what they do.
